Last Sunday, the movie industry was thrown into another shock with the death of one of its talent, Muna Obiekwe, who passed away due to alleged kidney related disease.
However, fresh facts have emerged over the real cause of his death.
According to information made available to Daily Times Life & Style, the late actor’s predicament, which led to his untimely death started a long while ago, but the actor thought he could manage it. He ignored the pains and continued working without paying much attention.
According to the source, he only took his drugs and medication once in a while as ‘Muna never believed the ailment could lead to his death. He believed he would survive it, like he did when he was shot, and the shock he went through when his parents died in a motor accident on same day.
We learnt that the kidney problem persisted and Muna was eventually forced to seek help from a Lagos doctor, who gave him a ray of hope. He assured Muna that his worst fears, kidney transplant, might not happen if only he could do up to 20 dialyses.
Vera Kanu, a mother figure to him at Nollywood, confirmed our findings: “I was with him to the last hour. He was to do up to 20 dialyses. The doctor said if the dialysis improved his condition, the worst would certainly be over. He would be okay only if he stays away from alcohol, but you know our artistes,” she concluded.
It was also revealed that the dialysis was expensive for Muna as he sometimes did two in a week, which included blood injection on each occasion. Each appointment cost N250,000 to N300,000. His health was eating deep into his purse, yet Muna refused to go cap-in-hand begging for financial help. He was a private guy who didn’t want the Press, or his colleagues to feast on his pain and cast aspersions on Nollywood as an industry of beggars.
However, not many also know that the late actor was married with two kids. He knew if some Nollywood people got to know about it, it would also attract the Press. He refused to beg because he wanted to save Nollywood’s image, hence he lost his life.
Despite his health challenges, Muna took to heavy smoking and drinking shortly after he lost his parents in a ghastly auto accident. He saw happiness in liquor but that never affected his job.
He was just like Sam Loco; he could drink the brewery dry but, when he hears the director shout ‘action’, he gets into character. Muna was a method character, despite his flaws our source reveals.
The late Muna was one of the three busiest actors, who featured in over 50 movies like Dirty Secret, Great Betrayal, BlackBerry Babes, Zara, Men in Love, amongst others.
The actor, who died on arrival at the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, Lagos, was rushed in after he collapse at his house. It was further disclosed that the late Muna stopped taking his drugs 14 days to the sad incident. His remains has been deposited at the Nigerian Navy Mortuary.
